Who knew there was an entire town of Völs in Europe!
When we get to travel, Zuzu & I always wear orange or a Power T for our college team: the Tennessee Vols! On our drive through Austria, we saw there’s a town named Völs! Obviously, we had to stop and get some pictures!
As die hard Tennessee fans, we’re always repping our Vols any chance we get, whether it’s at Neyland Stadium (the Home of The Vols) or on our travels around the world.
While it’s not uncommon to get a “Go Vols!” greeting from another Big Orange fan when we get to travel, this was the 1st time we’ve run across an entire city of Völs!
In the middle of our one week, cheap luxury trip to Germany and Switzerland, we had planned to stop in Innsbruck just for a quick lunch and gas. Innsbruck is roughly halfway between our stays at the fancy Park Hyatt Zurich in Switzerland and the luxurious Andaz Munich in Germany.

As we were driving toward Innsbruck, we noticed signs for a suburb called Völs!
After grabbing a quick lunch in Innsbruck, we suited up in even more Tennessee Volunteers gear and took the short side trip to Völs.
While Innsbruck is a pretty good size city (about twice the size of Knoxville), Völs is tiny. Its population of 7,275 wouldn’t even fill the Upper North Endzone seats of Neyland Stadium.
And the total area of Völs is only about twice the size of UT’s campus.
It’s a pretty typical European suburb with a mix of residential, retail and a few commercial buildings.
We started off at the main bus stop for a good picture of the Völs sign with the Alps in the background.
After that, we just started wandering around town looking for any signs that said Völs.
If you can help me with some of the translations (or any context), I’d really appreciate it! Just leave a comment at the end of this post!
Pretty sure this is the Völs Volunteer fire department. Kind of double dipping on Vols Volunteers, don’t you think! And check out the fire fighter in a suit of armor right in the middle of the building.
Here’s the Old Völs train station with the Alps in the background.
We love the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee but the Alps are just on another level… and elevation!
So I think this next one is the Völs Farmer’s Co-op. As John Ward said: “Go Co-op!”
This next sign says “120 Years of Völs” but I’m not sure what’s the deal with the piano pool, the geese and the lady.
Gesundheit Völs! I know this is some kind of medical building but I’d appreciate any comments on what you think it might be.
Another, smaller health center in Völs.
Keep your speed down or Sheriff Andy und Hilfssheriff Barney might pull you over.
No Starbucks in town but I’m pretty sure this is a small coffee shop in Völs. Any ideas what else it says?
No idea what this next place is. Help a Vol out if you have any ideas.
It was a fun side trip to visit Völs while we were driving through Austria. It just goes to show that John Ward was right when he said…
“No matter where you are in the world, ITS FOOTBALL TIME IN TENNESSEE!!”
